چکیده

Most previous work on understanding variable ordering heuristics for constraint satisfaction problems has focused on the ability to recover from bad decisions. It has been demonstrated however that this ability cannot be the full explanation of the quality of a variable ordering heuristic [8]. In this paper, we develop a more complete framework for analyzing heuristics based on optimal policies. We consider a second policy (in addition to the principle of quick recovery), which we call promise, which is simply to make choices that maximize the likelihood of successful search. We then develop a method for measuring the degree to which a heuristic conforms to the promise principle. Using this measure, we show that variable ordering heuristics vary with respect to their promise, and that for problems with many solutions the degree of promise correlates highly with efficiency of search.

Variable and Value Ordering Heuristics for Hard Constraint Satisfaction Problems: an Application to Job Shop Scheduling

Hard Constraint Satisfaction Problems (HCSPs) are Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSPs) with very large search spaces and very few solutions. Real-life problems such as design or factory scheduling are examples of HCSPs. These problems typically involve several hundred (or even several thousand) variables, each with up to several hundred possible values, only a very tiny fraction of which ult...

Effect of DisCSP Variable-Ordering Heuristics in Scale-Free Networks

A Distributed Constraint Satisfaction Problem (DisCSP) is a constraint satisfaction problem in which variables and constraints are distributed among multiple agents. Various algorithms for solving DisCSPs have been developed, which are intended for general purposes, i.e., they can be applied to any network structure. However, if a network has some particular structure, e.g., the network structu...

Multi Level Variable Ordering Heuristics for the Constraint Satisfaction Problem

The usual way for solving constraint satisfaction problems is to use a backtracking algorithm One of the key factors in its e ciency is the rule it will use to decide on which variable to branch next namely the variable ordering heuristics In this paper we attempt to give a general formulation of dynamic variable ordering heuristics that take into account the properties of the neighborhood of t...

Optimal Refutations for Constraint Satisfaction Problems

Variable ordering heuristics have long been an important component of constraint satisfaction search algorithms. In this paper we study the behaviour of standard variable ordering heuristics when searching an insoluble (sub)problem. We employ the notion of an optimal refutation of an insoluble (sub)problem and describe an algorithm for obtaining it. We propose a novel approach to empirically lo...

Comparing CSP Algorithms Without Considering Variable Ordering Heuristics can be Misleading

Many new algorithms for solving constraint satisfaction problems have been proposed in recent years. Their performance is usually compared with some other algorithms by measuring the number of compatibility checks or the cpu time that the algorithms need for solving a predetermined set of problems. There are some studies which compare algorithms without using any variable ordering heuristics. W...
